Long before the first vine was planted at Château Aarav, the landscape beneath it had already been taking shape for millions of years.
Our vineyard lies in the Eastern Himalayan foothills of Pedong, Kalimpong. The mountains surrounding the estate are the result of ancient geological forces that have shaped the Himalayan landscape over immense periods of time.
We often think of a vineyard in terms of what we can see—the vines, the leaves, the grapes and the landscape around them. But beneath all of this lies another story, one that began long before Château Aarav existed.
Over millions of years, geological processes and natural weathering transformed the rocks of this landscape. The resulting materials became part of the soils that now support our young vineyard.
The surrounding geological landscape is characterised by ancient Himalayan rock formations, weathered sandstone, quartzite, phyllite and schist.
These materials contribute to the physical foundation of the vineyard. Through weathering and soil formation, they influence aspects such as soil structure, drainage and the mineral composition of the ground in which our vines establish their roots.
For us, this is an important part of understanding terroir.
“Every root begins its journey through geology that is far older than humanity itself.”
A vineyard does not begin at the surface. The story of every vine extends underground, into the soil and ultimately into the geological history of the place.
As our vineyard matures, we will continue studying the individual characteristics of our estate and its four vineyard blocks. Professional soil analysis and careful observation will help us understand how the ground beneath each parcel interacts with the vines above it.
This process takes time. We cannot understand millions of years of geological history in a single growing season, nor should we expect to.
Our role is to observe, learn and work responsibly with what the land gives us.
The vines of Château Aarav are young today. Their roots are only beginning to explore the soil beneath them. Yet those roots are already connected to a geological story far older than the vineyard itself.
One day, when our first wines are ready, we hope they will carry something of this sense of place—not because we have tried to force the landscape into a particular style, but because we have taken the time to understand it.
Every root begins its journey through geology that is far older than humanity itself.
At Château Aarav, that ancient landscape is where our story begins.
